Train Radio

Radio masts

GSM-R radio masts decide where the train radio has a network.

The train radio only works where there is a network, and the network comes from GSM-R Radio Masts. Like the real thing, the mast is a galvanised lattice mast on a concrete foundation with panel antennas at the top.

Building a mast

Stack the pieces

Place GSM-R Radio Mast pieces on top of each other, as many as you like. The lowest piece stands on its foundation and the highest carries the antennas; both are chosen automatically when you add or remove pieces.

Set the range

Right-click the mast to make its range larger, sneak and right-click to make it smaller. The chat confirms the new value ("Radio cell: 256 blocks range").

Range steps64, 128, 256 (default), 512, 1024, 2048 blocks

Unloaded chunksThe mast still covers its area; it is kept in the world data.

Who needs a network

  • Trains with a Cab Radio and players with a GSM-R Handheld Radio need a mast in range.
  • The Dispatcher Radio Desk and the Signal Telephone are wired. They always have a network.
  • The radio window shows GSM-R network or No network at the top.

Without a network nothing goes out, not even an emergency call. A call that is running when you leave the coverage breaks off with "Radio connection lost". Under ETCS level 2 the train keeps its last movement authority, which then runs out ahead of it (see Train protection).

Radio everywhere

If you do not want to build masts, switch off Only with masts. Then the whole world has coverage.

  • In the radio window: the button Only with masts at the bottom. It is shown to players who may change CRN's "Global Settings".
  • By command: /cmr radio masts on|off.
A single 2048-block mast in the middle of a small network is enough to get started. Later, smaller masts every few hundred blocks along the line look more like the real railway.
